Santa Claus is on his way, the Rovaniemi event where Santa sets off on his Christmas journey, was held on December 23 in 2025. Visit Rovaniemi has not yet published the 2026 date, so check its Christmas events page before you book flights around it.
Where should you spend Christmas in Lapland?
Rovaniemi is the Christmas base for most first-time visitors, because Santa Claus Village, SantaPark and the airport all sit within a few kilometers of each other. Levi suits families who want skiing alongside a Christmas programme. Ylläs and Saariselkä are quieter fell resorts where the holidays revolve around nature and outdoor activities rather than Santa.
Rovaniemi and the Arctic Circle
Rovaniemi is the capital of Lapland and the end of the line for the Santa Claus Express night train from Helsinki. Santa Claus Village sits on the Arctic Circle 8 km (5 miles) north of the city center. Rovaniemi Airport is only 3 km (2 miles) from the village and 10 km (6 miles) from the center, so you can reach Santa without a car.
Levi in Kittilä
Levi, a ski resort in the municipality of Kittilä, runs a full Christmas programme around Zero Point at the foot of the Front slope. Its Christmas page lists a Christmas Market at Zero Point (Hissitie 8), open daily 10:00–18:00 with shorter hours on December 24–26. Leevilandia has a Christmas trail and an outdoor disco for children. Levi reports that grocery stores, souvenir shops and restaurants stay open during Christmas week, and it advises booking Christmas dinners in advance.
Ylläs and Saariselkä
Ylläs, in Kolari, is 35 km (22 miles) from Kittilä Airport, the same airport that serves Levi, and the night train from Helsinki also runs to Kolari. Saariselkä, in Inari, is served by Ivalo Airport. Both are smaller than Rovaniemi and have no Santa attraction on the scale of the Arctic Circle, so a Christmas there is built around skiing, safaris and the fells.
Santa Claus Village at Christmas
Santa Claus Village is a free-entry area on the Arctic Circle with Santa Claus Office, Santa Claus’ Main Post Office, Snowman World, restaurants and safari operators. It is not one company but more than 50 businesses working together, so each attraction sets its own hours and prices. The Arctic Circle line is marked across the central square.

Santa’s office takes walk-ins, and the village recommends arriving earlier in the day from late November to early January. The Christmas Express Pass buys a fast-track entry at a scheduled time. Letters dropped in the red post box at the Main Post Office are held and sent to arrive for Christmas, and every card gets the Arctic Circle postmark.
SantaPark: the underground Christmas park
SantaPark is an indoor Christmas theme park built inside a cavern at the Arctic Circle in Rovaniemi, with an elf school, Santa’s office, a post office, a bakery and a train ride. Because everything is underground, the cold outside does not cut a visit short. On Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve it also sells festive dinners.

How much does Christmas in Lapland cost?
The cost of a Christmas trip to Lapland depends mostly on flights and accommodation, which the airline, hotel or tour operator prices by date. The Santa experiences themselves range from free to around €230 per activity. Sample 2026–2027 prices from official listings:
- Meeting Santa at Santa Claus Village: free; photos extra
- SantaPark entry: from €42 per adult, €37 per child
- Reindeer safari from Santa Claus Village, 1 h 30 min: from €119 per adult (December–March, listed on Visit Rovaniemi)
- Husky ride, 4 km, Christmas season: €120 per adult, €60 per child (listed on Visit Rovaniemi)
- Self-driven husky safari, 4 h with hotel transfers and thermal overalls: from €229 per adult (listed on Visit Rovaniemi)
- Night-train cabin to Lapland: from €59; with a shower from €74
Package holidays that combine flights, hotel, thermal clothing and a Santa visit are sold by tour operators, including day trips from the UK. Compare what each one includes, such as transfers, clothing hire and a private Santa meeting, rather than the headline price alone.
How do you get to Lapland for Christmas?
Lapland’s Christmas destinations are reached by air or by the night train from Helsinki. Kittilä Airport is 15 km (9 miles) from Levi and 35 km (22 miles) from Ylläs. Ivalo Airport serves Saariselkä and Inari.
The VR night trains run from Helsinki to Rovaniemi, Kemijärvi and Kolari. Private cabins start at €59, cabins with a shower at €74, and a car can come along from €49. Tickets are sold through VR’s night-train page.
What is open on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day?
Christmas Eve on December 24 is the main family celebration in Finland, and December 25 and 26 are public holidays. Most shops close on Christmas Day. Alko, the state alcohol store, is closed on December 24, 25 and 26, and so are regular post offices, so buy wine and send parcels before Christmas Eve.
Tourist areas work differently. Santa Claus Village publishes daily hours for Santa’s office through to January 3, SantaPark lists 09:00–18:00 every day from December 24 to 31, and Levi keeps its Christmas Market open with shorter hours on December 24–26.
What weather and daylight should you expect?
December in Rovaniemi averages −20 to −10 °C (−4 to 14 °F), and snow is most likely throughout the month, according to Visit Rovaniemi. Around the shortest days, December 21–22, the Arctic Circle is in polar night, with only a few hours of blue twilight around midday. Dress in layers: thermal base layers, a wool mid-layer, an insulated outer layer, and warm boots, mittens and a hat.
The northern lights can appear in December, and the long darkness gives more hours to watch for them, but a sighting is never guaranteed. Clear skies decide most nights, so check the cloud forecast and the aurora forecast, then head somewhere away from street lights.
Frequently asked questions
Does Santa live in Lapland?
Finnish tradition says Santa, Joulupukki in Finnish, lives at Korvatunturi, a fell in Savukoski in eastern Lapland near the Russian border. Because Korvatunturi is so remote, he meets visitors at his office on the Arctic Circle in Rovaniemi, where Santa Claus Village opened in 1985. The village is open every day of the year.
What currency is used in Lapland?
Lapland uses the euro (€), like the rest of Finland, which has been in the eurozone since the currency launched. Safari operators, SantaPark and the businesses at Santa Claus Village all list their prices in euros, and bookings made from abroad are charged in euros, so your card may add a currency conversion fee.
Are there white Christmas holiday packages for 2026?
Yes, tour operators sell Lapland Christmas packages for 2026, from day trips to week-long stays, usually with flights, hotel, thermal clothing and a Santa visit. No one can guarantee snow, but Visit Rovaniemi describes snow as most likely throughout December. Check whether a package lands at Rovaniemi, Kittilä or Ivalo, because that sets your transfer time.
Is Lapland still worth visiting in January 2027?
Yes. After Epiphany on January 6 the Christmas holidays end, but the main Santa attractions stay open. Santa’s office keeps daily hours of 09:00–18:00 from January 4 to March 31, and SantaPark stays open until January 23, 2027. Reindeer safaris from Santa Claus Village run through March.
For Christmas 2026, the dates to settle first are the ones fixed by the calendar: your flight or night train around December 23–26 and, in Levi or Rovaniemi, any Christmas Eve dinner the restaurants take reservations for.
