How much daylight does Rovaniemi get in December?

Rovaniemi’s sunrise moves from 10:13 on 1 December to 11:07 on the solstice, and sunset from 13:58 to 13:22. After 21 December the days lengthen again, slowly: by New Year’s Eve the sun is up for about 2 hours 40 minutes. All times are Finnish time (UTC+2).

Date (2026) Sunrise–sunset (daylight)
1 December 10:13–13:58 (about 3 h 45 min)
10 December 10:45–13:34 (about 2 h 50 min)
21 December 11:07–13:22 (2 h 15 min)
31 December 11:00–13:39 (about 2 h 40 min)

Polar night, the period when the sun stays below the horizon all day, does not strictly happen in Rovaniemi’s city center, which lies just south of the Arctic Circle. Some guides say the sun does not rise at all on the shortest day; the sunrise tables show it does, for a little over two hours, very low on the southern horizon. Civil twilight on 21 December runs from about 09:15 to 15:15, so daytime activities such as reindeer or husky rides make the most sense between about 10:00 and 14:00.

Long nights also mean long hours of darkness for the northern lights. Seeing them still depends on clear skies and solar activity, and no December trip can promise a sighting; our comparison of northern lights tours in Rovaniemi lists group tours from about €69 to €238 per adult.

What is the weather like in Rovaniemi in December?

Rovaniemi’s December temperature is typically between −10 and −20 °C (14 to −4 °F), according to Visit Rovaniemi. Clear nights are the coldest, because there is no cloud cover to hold in the heat.

Clothing for December works in three layers: a wool or synthetic base layer, a fleece or down middle layer and a windproof outer shell, plus a hat, a neck warmer, mittens over thin gloves and insulated winter boots. Before booking a safari, check whether the price includes thermal overalls and boots, since that changes how much you need to pack.

Three to four days suit a first December visit: one for Santa Claus Village, one for a husky or reindeer safari, one for Arktikum and the city, and evenings for an aurora tour. Santa Claus Village is about 8 km (5 miles) north of the center, so a half day there also works on a tighter schedule.
