Where to Stay in Rovaniemi: Downtown, Santa Claus Village or Ounasvaara, With 9 Hotels and Igloos Compared

Red-railed paved walkway between log buildings in Santa Claus Village near Rovaniemi

Where to stay in Rovaniemi comes down to three areas: downtown, Santa Claus Village or Ounasvaara. Downtown puts restaurants and the train station within reach. Santa Claus Village, 8 km north of downtown on the Arctic Circle, is where the glass igloos and sauna suites cluster. Ounasvaara is the fell (a rounded Lapland hill) on the edge of town, next to the ski slopes.

In short:

  • Santa Claus Village sits about 3 km from Rovaniemi Airport, the shortest transfer after landing.
  • Local bus 8 runs from the railway station via the downtown stop Ruokasenkatu to the Arctic Circle.
  • Room rates published on the hotels’ own sites span €139 to €543 per room per night.
  • Two of the nine stays below are well outside town, Apukka Resort and the Arctic SnowHotel in Sinettä, and need a shuttle, transfer or car.

Information checked on November 3, 2026 against the hotels’ and transport operators’ official websites.

Which area of Rovaniemi suits you?

Downtown Rovaniemi suits travelers without a car, short stays and anyone arriving on the Helsinki to Rovaniemi night train. Restaurants, shops and the bus routes are on foot from the city hotels. The trade-off is streetlight: faint northern lights are harder to see from a lit street than from a dark forest.

Santa Claus Village suits families and glass-igloo stays. The village, the Arctic Circle line and SantaPark are close together, and several of the stays below are within walking distance of the village center. Downtown restaurants are a bus or taxi ride away.

Ounasvaara suits skiers and hikers who still want the city close. The Ounasvaara ski resort has 11 slopes and 5 lifts, and its 2026–2027 season runs from November 11 to April 17. Cross-country tracks start on the same fell.

Staying outside town, at Apukka or in Sinettä, buys darker skies and a forest setting. It also means relying on shuttles, transfers or a rental car for everything else.

How much does a night in Rovaniemi cost?

Rovaniemi’s lowest published rates in this guide are the downtown rooms at Arctic Light Hotel, and the highest are the large sauna cottages at Nova Skyland. Glass igloos and treehouse suites mostly show prices only in the booking engine, and these change with the date. Compare what each rate includes before you choose.

  • City hotels: the widest choice, with buses and restaurants on the doorstep.
  • Glass igloos and glass suites: the main draw of the Santa Claus Village area and Apukka; check whether a sauna, hot tub or breakfast is included.
  • Cabins and villas: Apukka’s villa and family-size Aurora Cabins sleep groups, which spreads the cost per person.

All prices are per room per night unless stated; check the current rate when you book.

What should you book early?

Visit Rovaniemi recommends booking accommodation in advance. Christmas trips are the ones with fixed dates; our guide to Christmas in Lapland 2026 covers what Santa Claus Village runs in December. A snow-room night has to fit inside the Arctic SnowHotel’s season, so set those dates first.

Glass-roofed rooms pay off most in the dark months: the aurora needs darkness and a clear sky, and no hotel can promise a sighting. Our month-by-month guide to the best time to visit Lapland shows when the nights are dark enough. A downtown stay pairs well with a guided trip out of town; see our comparison of northern lights tours in Rovaniemi.

How do you get around without a car?

Rovaniemi’s bus 8, run by Linkkari, is the year-round link between downtown and Santa Claus Village. Seasonal Santa’s Express buses cost €4 one way (€7 return); neither they nor the Airport Express take cash. Timetables and tickets are on airportbus.fi.

Apukka guests use the resort’s own shuttle, and Sinettä needs a transfer or a rental car. Official taxis serve the airport and the village; ask the fare before you set off.

FAQ

Which is better, Rovaniemi or Levi?

Rovaniemi is better for a first trip built around Santa Claus Village and city comforts; Levi, a ski resort in Kittilä, is better for a ski week. Levi also hosts the slalom races of the Levi World Cup 2026 in November. To combine both, our guide Rovaniemi to Levi by bus, car or transfer compares the options.

Where to go around Rovaniemi?

Beyond the city, the main trips run north to the fells of Levi and Saariselkä. Saariselkä, in Inari, is the farther of the two, and Ivalo Airport is the flying alternative to the long drive. Our route guide Rovaniemi to Saariselkä by bus, car or flight gives the travel times and costs.
